Florida university reportedly denies student mental health access because he is White

A pupil at the University of South Florida (USF) was reportedly denied psychological wellbeing providers since he was not a member of the black, indigenous and folks of coloration (BIPOC) group, in accordance to communications attained by Campus Reform

Andrew Davis desired to show up at an “Understanding Self and Other people” (USO) group therapy assembly, but he recognized that none of the sessions worked with his schedule. Due to the fact of this, he requested USF’s counseling heart if he could show up at the BIPOC conference as it was the only time he could attend, but the university informed him this was not allowed.

“I am interested in attending a USO team meeting just after finishing the pre-group appointment but the only day/time that functions for me is Wednesdays during the BIPOC learners-only team,” Davis inquired in an electronic mail. “I am not a BIPOC student but was thinking if I would however be able to attend?”

“The Counseling Middle will not prohibit any group of pupil [from] participating in specialized counseling teams unless of course specific exception, or a healthcare mandate is identified that could help exclusivity,” the university responded. 

In addition, Davis was reportedly targeted by Equal Prospect Officer Kenneth Thomas during an Oct. 18 Microsoft Groups info-collecting assembly concerning the issue. 

David said Thomas “was accusatory” and “asked me if I even understood what BIPOC meant and if I comprehended the relevance of those teams obtaining their possess dialogue,” according to Campus Reform.

“He did not look involved about my grievance and was a lot more nervous about the University’s capacity to continue these groups,” Davis additional.
