Happy solstice to all. We have some special pets to share with you. September 24-25

Happy solstice to all. We have some special pets to share with you. September 24-25

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The shedding does not stop. Sweeping, brushing, washing, it keeps coming! Not a problem when you think of the love you get in return. It’s worth it.

Some breeds with a double coat, like German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Akitas, Samoyeds, and Malamutes, experience “coat blow.” Coat blow is when dogs switch from their winter coats to their summer coats.

A grooming kit with three essential tools is good to keep handy.

  • Brushes: These come with rubber tines, synthetic or natural bristles, metal pins, or fine metal tines. Metal tines are often found on what are called “slicker” brushes. The Delomo Dog Grooming Glove is an eco-friendly tool that can give your cat or dog a massage while de-shedding and removing dander.
  • Blade-on-a-handle metal combs: These are de-shedding tools, like Furminator, Oster Shedmonster, or Paws and Pals.
  • Wide-toothed combs: They have widely separated teeth and come in plastic or metal. Shiny Pet offers a popular comb that removes knots and won’t hurt your pet.

While cats are generally low maintenance, experts say introducing your kitty to healthy grooming habits early on is your best option. Your dog or cat can use the brushes above.

On the other hand, cats are more self-sufficient when left with a clean litter box, food, and fresh water. Unlike dogs, they might not destroy things when dealing with separation anxiety. If you leave them with the necessities, they can be left alone for up to 24 hours.

If leaving your pet longer than the recommended time, it’s a good idea to have a dog walker or friend come and check on them to make sure they have what they need. And if they have a fur friend to keep them company, two heads are better than one.
